The Uniformed Reserve Deputy Sheriff Program is a volunteer organization of individuals who provide the Sheriff's Office with additional law enforcement resources to better serve the citizens of Carson City.

Qualifications
A Reserve Deputy Sheriff is a sworn law enforcement officer for Carson City and must meet all Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements. Prospective Reserve candidates are required to complete a background investigation, meet physical agility standards and undergo a medical examination. Upon appointment, Reserve Academies are offered to those who do not currently hold a Nevada POST certificate.

Reserve Unit Responsibility
Reserve Deputies are required to perform a minimum of 12 hours of duty assignments each month, 2 of which must be in the Carson City Jail, however many of the agency's Reserve Deputies volunteer much more than this minimum requirement.  They must also attend additional Reserve training, monthly meetings and undergo regular firearms proficiency training.

Reserve Unit Assignments
Special Events – Reserve Deputies are often called upon to assist with many of the special events held throughout Carson City. Some events are:
    -    Carnivals                                                                     -    Independence Day Celebrations
    -    Christmas Eve Santa Program                                -    Nevada Day Parade
    -    Carson High Athletic Events and Graduation         -    New Years's Eve
    -    Halloween

Emergency Call-Outs

During city-wide emergencies, Reserve Deputies may be called upon to assist the Sheriff as needed. Emergency call-outs are rare and are generally for natural disasters such as brush fires, earthquakes, or floods.

Detention Facility
After being sworn, all Reserve Deputies are required to work in the Carson City Jail. There, Reserve Deputies assist Jail staff with all aspects of jail operations from intake and booking of inmates to court room security and medical transports.

Patrol
Reserve Deputies assist the Patrol Division by working with Deputies as a two-man unit assigned to a Patrol beat. Additionally, Reserve Deputies assist with traffic control, tows and transport of persons taken into custody.

Rural Patrol
Reserve Deputies have been given the special task of patrolling Carson City’s outlying rural areas. These patrols are conducted during the summer in the Pinion Hills to the east and at Chimney Beach at Lake Tahoe to the west. These patrols are a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
